The goal
She had an existing walkway that had cracked and was unsightly, and it had become a tripping hazard.
She was a repeat customer, and we did the work in phases: first the main walkway along the side of the house, then we came back and finished the front entrance. On a separate job, we also built a flagstone path through her backyard (see below).
Before & after
The same spot by the side gate.

What we installed
- Tear-out of the old, cracked walkway
- Six inches excavated to make room for a proper base
- Road base, compacted in lifts for a firm foundation
- Oklahoma flagstone in browns and beiges, with most of the stone reused from the old walkway
- A mortar bed under the stone for a smooth, long-lasting walkway with no tripping hazards
How we built it
- Rip it out: we tore out the old, cracked walkway.
- Excavate: we dug out 6 inches of dirt.
- Road base: we added a firm base of road base, compacted in lifts.
- Reuse the stone: we repurposed most of the existing flagstone and laid it out on the new base.
- Mortar bed: we set the flagstone on a mortar bed for a long-lasting finish: a smooth walkway with no tripping hazards.
Step by step

The challenge: tight access and a freshly stained fence
Access along the side of the house was very tight. The homeowner’s fence had just been stained, so we covered it with paper to keep it clean, and we covered any other areas that could get stained by concrete while we worked. We were very careful.

Another phase: backyard flagstone path
A separate job for the same homeowner: a flagstone path set and mortared through her backyard.

How this job started
This walkway started next door: while we were building a backyard flagstone patio and laying sod for her neighbor, she came out, liked what she saw and asked us for a quote.
The result
A smooth, solid flagstone walkway with no tripping hazards. The customer was ecstatic.
