  • Time on site: 2 days
  • Materials: river rock, cut-limestone border set on a mortar bed, landscape fabric
  • Plants: existing shrubs kept in place

The goal

The homeowner wanted to clean up the beds along the front of his house. They were overgrown with weeds and grass, with no defined edge or border where the beds met the lawn.

He wanted a bed that would be easy to maintain, and he didn’t want mulch. We recommended river rock with a cut-limestone border set in mortar, so the edge stays put and the bed stays clean for years.

Before & after

Same corner of the front bed, before and after.

Before: front flower bed with weeds and grass growing into it and no defined edge along the lawn
Before: weeds and grass, no defined edge
After: the same front bed filled with river rock and edged with a cut-limestone border around the existing shrubs
After: river rock and a cut-limestone border

What we installed

  • Bed cleanup: cleared the weeds and grass out of the beds along the front of the house
  • Landscape fabric under the rock to help keep weeds down
  • River rock filled around the existing shrubs
  • Mortared cut-limestone border set on a mortar bed along the lawn edge for a defined, lasting line
  • A second, smaller bordered bed out in the lawn, finished the same way

How we built it

  1. Clear it out: we removed the weeds and grass from the beds.
  2. Trench and base: we trenched the border line and built a firm base.
  3. Set the border in mortar: we set the cut-limestone border on a mortar bed for a lasting finish.
  4. Fabric down: we laid landscape fabric around the shrubs.
  5. River rock: we filled the beds with river rock up to the border.
During: front beds dug out with landscape fabric laid down around the shrubs and a small bed dug in the lawn

The shrubs stayed where they were. No mulch to replace every season: the river rock and the mortared cut-limestone border give the front of the house a clean, defined edge that’s easy to keep tidy.
