The goal

The homeowner wanted to update his backyard and complete the look. His spouse loves yoga and wanted a place to practice, and this spot was the perfect place for it.

They also have pets, so they wanted a pet-friendly turf area with proper drainage. To complete the look and add a bit of contrast, we finished it with Mexican beach pebble, a premium material the customer chose after we provided river rock samples.

What we installed

  • Pet-friendly artificial turf, fitted to the existing limestone block border
  • A well-draining base: 4 inches of road base and 1 inch of decomposed granite, both compacted
  • Mexican beach pebble around the trees, a premium material the customer chose after we provided river rock samples, to complete the look and add a bit of contrast

How we built it

  1. Clear it out: we removed the existing vegetation.
  2. Landscape fabric: we laid landscape fabric over the cleared area.
  3. Road base: we added four inches of road base and compacted it in lifts.
  4. Decomposed granite: we added an inch of decomposed granite and compacted it to leave a smooth finish under the turf. Both layers drain well, which matters with pets.
  5. Install the turf: we installed the artificial turf over the compacted base and trimmed it to the existing limestone border.
  6. Infill: we brushed infill into the turf.
  7. Mexican beach pebble: we finished with Mexican beach pebble accents for contrast.
