What edging does

A good edge holds a clean line between bed and lawn, keeps rock from spilling onto the grass, and stops runners from creeping into beds. The right type depends on the look you want, how curvy the bed is, and your budget.

Common types of edging

Plastic edging

The budget-friendly option. It’s flexible, so it follows tight curves, and it’s staked into the ground. Set properly, it disappears under the rock. It can shift over time if it isn’t staked and backfilled well, and it gives a softer line than steel or stone.

Steel edging

A thin, crisp line that holds its shape and lasts. It costs more than plastic and suits clean, modern designs and long, gentle curves. The top edge should sit at a safe height so it isn’t a trip or cut hazard.

Stone and limestone borders

Cut limestone or natural stone gives a heavier, natural edge that matches many Hill Country and San Antonio homes. Pieces can be set on a compacted base or on a mortar bed; a mortared border stays put and keeps a defined line for years. For taller borders, raised beds and walls, see retaining walls and landscape borders.

Brick edging

A classic look that ties in with brick homes. Bricks can be laid flat as a mowing strip or stood on edge, set on a compacted base or in mortar.

Bender board edging

Bender board (sometimes called benda board) is a long, thin, flexible strip that bends to follow curved beds and is held in place with stakes. It’s made in wood as well as plastic and composite versions. It gives a low, simple edge between beds and lawn.
